Robot Buying Guide
Choosing the right robot mower for you can feel quite overwhelming.
There are a few key factors to consider when deciding on the mower that will be able to manage your garden.
- What is the size of the area to be mowed?
- Accurately calculating the size of your lawn is essential to ensure you select the right model. There are online tools available to help you to determine the size. Include all areas that you want the robot to cover.
- Using the total square meterage is the initial filter to apply. It is recommended to select a mower that has a capacity that is 20 to 30 percent more than your total area.
- What is the terrain like?
- Is your lawn flat or are there slopes? Will the mower need to cross any paths, patios or driveways to reach all the areas to be mowed?
- Most standard robot mowers can handle slopes up to 15 degrees but steeper slopes and uneven terrain would require a mower with all wheel drive (AWD).
- Lawns that are uneven or have damage from pets and wildlife would suitable for a mower with suspension.
- How do you want the mowed area to look?
- Are you just looking for a regular cut or do you want a striped finish? Do you want to cut different areas at different heights? Maybe you have formal lawns that you want a low cut and a paddock that is left longer.
- Look for models that have a wide range of cutting heights and whether the adjustment is made manually on the robot or can be adjusted electronically.
- How much control do you want over the mower?
- Do you want to be able to make regular changes to the mower settings, such as adjusting the mowing schedule or making changes to mowing patterns?
- Choose a mower that has an App and user interface that is easy to use.
FAQS - Frequently Asked Questions
- There are so many different mowers on the market. How do I decide on the right one for me?
- There are two main types of robot on the market, wired and wireless.
- Wired robots need to have a physical wire installed under the ground to set the mowing area. Large or complex areas are time consuming and difficult to set up. The mower will need to be reinstalled if changes are made to the garden layout.
- Wireless robots use satellites technology to guide the mower around the mowing area. Large or complex areas can be mapped easily and quickly. Changes to the garden layout can be made and the mower programming can be modified to adapt to this.
- Can I install the robot mower myself or do I need to get it professionally installed?
- Sunseeker have an easy to use App that assists the end user to install and configure the robot mower. If you are comfortable with the use of a smart phone then you may want to self install your robot.
- If you have a complicated garden layout or are not confident using a smart phone app, then you may want to consider getting your robot installed by a professional.
- Are robot mowers safe if there are children, pets or other wildlife in the garden?
- Sunseeker robots have cameras that use powerful AI technology to identify and automatically avoid any obstacles in the mowing area. Additionally, some models are equipped with infrared and thermal imaging cameras that allow them to detect and avoid even hidden items at night.
- The robots are also fitted with sensors that automatically stop the mower if any attempt to lift it up is made.
- How often will the robot mower cut my lawn?
- It most cases the mower will set a schedule that will cut the lawn completely three times a week.
- The schedule can be adjusted by the user to alter the days and time of day that the mower will operate.
- What does the mower do with the grass that is cut?
- Robot mowers cut the grass using a technique called 'mulching'. This means that the grass is cut into fine particles that are deposited back into the lawn and are then absorbed back into the ground.
- Cutting the grass reguarly means that the cut particles are very small and delivers a healthier lawn.
- What maintenance does a robot mower need?
- Like all mowers, a robot needs to have some maintenance to ensure that it operates efficiently. It is recommended to check and clean the mower periodically to remove any build up of grass around the blades and wheels. Sunseeker mowers can be cleaned with a hand brush or with a hose.
- The mowers use small precise blades to ensure a clean cut of the grass. These blades need to be replaced when worn out. The mowers are supplied with spare blades and screws which are easy to replace.
- The mower needs to have an annual service by an authorised dealer to ensure it continues to operate correctly and to comply with the warranty conditions.
- How much control do I have over the mower once it is installed?
- The Sunseeker App gives you full control of the mower. You can alter the mowing schedule, even giving the robot a day off if you want! You can change the way the robot mows, including adjusting the width of the lawn stripes or changing the height at which the grass is cut.
- Can the mower operate at night?
- Depending on the model, the mower can be set to mow in the day and at night, or you may choose to only mow during the hours of darkness so that you can have full access to the lawn in the daytime.
